Are there changes you believe need to be made to Bellevue’s minimum wage, paid sick leave, gig worker, hotel worker, and other labor standards laws, and what are they?
Yes, I believe changes are needed to Bellevue’s labor standards.
First, we should eliminate the subminimum wage. This outdated policy is rooted in racist and sexist practices that force workers, especially women and immigrants, to tolerate harassment just to earn tips. It has no place in our city.
Second, we need a higher minimum wage. Bellevue’s cost of living is higher than Seattle’s, yet our minimum wage is lower. That does not make sense. Workers in Bellevue deserve wages that match the reality of living here.
All jobs should include paid sick days. At a minimum, workers should have 14 paid sick days per year, especially for jobs like caregiving, food service, and gig work. These workers are often exposed to illnesses or create a higher risk for others if they come in sick. Employers should be fined if their employees are forced to work while sick because they don’t have sick days available.
I also support a “first right of return” ordinance. This would require businesses to rehire workers laid off for reasons other than performance.
Lastly, I want Bellevue to require full payment bonds from the companies we contract with. This ensures workers on city-funded projects are always paid on time and fairly.
These changes will make Bellevue a better place to live and work by prioritizing fairness and dignity for all workers.
